Lalas began his football career at the university. He studied and trained at the Cranbrook Kingswood High School, Birmingham, Michigan College.
In 1994 and after the good role of Lalas in the USA '94 World Cup, he began his career in European football. On July 27 that same year he debuted in the ranks of the Padova, Italian Serie A, becoming the first American player to play in the history of calcium. In 1995 he was named U.S. Soccer Male Athlete of the Year. He remained in the Padova until 1996, when he returned to his country to play in the ranks of the New England Revolution, set in which he continued demonstrating his conditions and which was included in the MLS All Star, in 2001 Lalas decided to return to football practice and signed for Los Angeles Galaxy, where he would return to taste the glory and success. He contributed his experience so that his team conquered the Confederations Cup and the U.S. 2001 Open Cup. A year later, in 2002, he helped the Galaxy to get his first MLS Cup. He retired definitively in 2003.
